Beer

Beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in the world. It is the third most popular drink (of any kind) after tea and water. It is consumed in every country in the world. So what is it then, and why is beer so poular?

Beer is an alcoholic beverage made by adding warm water to malted barley and other cereal grains. The enzymes in the barley change the malted barley and other grains into simple sugars. This is called the mash. The water is then drained from the grain, resulting in what is referred to as ‘wort’. The wort is boiled and hops are added to add flavour and preserve the beer. The wort is then cooled and yeast is added, which turns the sugars into alcohol, resulting in beer.

Different recipes and ingredients will create different styles of beer. For example, a Lager uses bottom fermenting yeasts which results in a crisper, cleaner beer. Ales use top fermenting yeast, resulting in more flavourful and fruitier beers.

In today’s market, there is an abundance of beer styles and with the emergence of so many craft breweries and subsequently, craft beers, there has been an explosion of the beer category and hence choice and offering for the consumer.

What once was a choice between a lager, an ale or a stout beer has now evolved into choosing between an IPA, XPA, XXPA, XXXPA, NIPA, Dark Beer, Amber Ale, Golden Ale, Pilsener, Sour beer…and that’s just touching the surface! These beer styles may be local Australian beer, or International Beer. They may be low alcohol beer, mid-strength beer or heavy beer. 15 years ago at BottlO’Briens, we ordered a case of Heineken, concerned that it wouldn’t sell, as Heineken back then was considered a little left of centre.
